Glossary of SEO Terms:

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation – It is the process of improving your website’s visibility within search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. It therfore increases the amount of traffic visting your website which in-turn get you more leads and sales.

Formula – 1. recipe: directions for making something; 2. a process based on fundamental principles.

Search Engines – A search engine is a website or type of software that searches files across the internet for specific keywords or phrases defined by the user. Examples are: Google, Yahoo, Bing, Alta Vista, Ask…

Crawlers – these are Search Engine programs that travel the internet and index web pages by noting keywords and content. They are also called spiders or robots.

Indexing – is the process of collecting, analyzing, and storing data for fast and accurate data retrieval. Seach engines ‘index’ your website.

Black Hat & White Hat – Bad or good SEO techniques. Black representing ‘Bad’ and White representing ‘Good’

Rank – PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.

HTML Source Code – hypertext markup language: a set of tags and rules or using them in developing hypertext documents. Basicaly the nerdy stuff that makes a website.

XML Sitemaps – XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a set of rules for encoding documents electronically. A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users.

RSS Feeds – RSS (most commonly expanded as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.

Log File Analysis – The analysis of records stored in the log file. In its raw format, the data in the log files can be hard to read and overwhelming. There are numerous log file analyzers that convert log file data into user-friendly charts and graphs.

Meta Tags – Meta elements are HTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a Web page. Such elements must be placed as tags in the head section of a website.

Robot.txt – is a convention to prevent cooperating web spiders and other web robots from accessing all or part of a website which is otherwise publicly viewable.

Anchor Tag – the text applied to a hyperlink used by search engines to apply relevance to that particular link.

"No follow" – A HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index.

Social Media – Social media are primarily Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings.[1] The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio.

Blog – web log: a shared on-line journal where people can post diary entries about their personal experiences and hobbies; "postings on a blog are usually in chronological order".

Forum or Message Board
- is an online discussion site. It originated as the modern equivalent of a traditional bulletin board, and a technological evolution of the dialup bulletin board system. From a technological standpoint, forums or boards are web applications managing user-generated content.

Google Analytical Reports - Google Analytics (GA) is a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Its main highlight is that the product is aimed at marketers as opposed to webmasters and technologists from which the industry of web analytics originally grew.
